Transport & Home Delivery Manager | Birmingham | Retail / Distribution | £50k + bonus
A well-established, retail business is looking for an experienced Transport & Home Delivery Manager to take ownership of its transport and customer-delivery operation from its Birmingham distribution centre.
This is a business-critical, hands-on management role with genuine scope to make a significant impact. You'll lead the transport administration team, drivers and two-person delivery crews, taking ownership from transport planning and vehicle allocation through to the successful completion of the delivery.
The business is going through a period of positive change, and this role is being created for someone who can improve the operation, challenge existing practices and build a more structured, accountable and commercially effective transport function.
Experience within furniture (homeware). 2 man delivery/big bulky, white glove service or home delivery is required.
The Role
You'll have responsibility for the day-to-day performance and longer-term improvement of the transport and home-delivery operation, including:
Leading and developing the transport administration team, drivers and two-person delivery crews.
Improving route planning, capacity planning and vehicle utilisation.
Reducing cost per delivery, overtime and unnecessary team expenditure.
Improving driver and delivery-crew productivity and accountability.
Reducing avoidable transit damage, failed deliveries, missing items and property damage.
Strengthening fleet, driver-hours and transport compliance.
Introducing clear daily and weekly operational controls, KPIs and performance measures.
Reviewing the current delivery model and identifying the most effective balance between in-house fleet and third-party support.
Working closely with the Warehouse Manager and Customer Service Manager while retaining clear ownership of transport and delivery performance.
Identifying and implementing process improvements that deliver measurable operational and commercial benefits.
The Warehouse Manager already owns goods-in, stock control, picking, loading and goods-out, meaning this role is specifically focused on transport planning, delivery execution and the customer experience beyond the distribution centre.
About You
We're looking for a visible, resilient and commercially minded operational leader who is comfortable being on the floor and working directly with drivers, crews and administrators.
You'll ideally have:
Proven experience managing a transport and distribution operation for a furniture retailer or working for a 3PL that runs a similar operation.
Experience managing drivers, delivery crews and vehicle fleets.
A National CPC is highly desirable although the business is open to exceptional leaders who are willing to obtain the qualification.
Strong experience within two-person, bulky-goods and customer-home delivery.
A track record of improving an underperforming operation.
Strong knowledge of fleet and transport compliance.
Experience managing performance, attendance and conduct.
The ability to introduce structure, accountability and consistent operational standards.
A commercially focused approach, with an understanding of cost per delivery, productivity and vehicle utilisation.
The confidence to challenge existing processes and see improvements through to completion.
Furniture experience would be particularly relevant, although strong candidates from home appliances, kitchens, bathrooms, building products or other customer-facing delivery environments will also be considered.
